Specialist Pathway hopeful here!

7 posts in this topic

Hello folks! I just joined the forum yesterday. I am now a final year MD Psychiatry PG in India and will be passing out next year in April. I have been interested in Australia for long, and have heard that a lot of Indian Psychiatrists easily get jobs there. I have tried to understand the Specialist Pathway many times but it is still very confusing. I would like to take help from people who are in the know/have made it to Australia. Here are my questions:

1. What is the first thing I should do after my MD for application through Specialist Pathway?

2. After I send my application, how long will it take to get a reply from RANZCP?
3. Do I have to get a job after the reply from RANZCP or should I already have a job offer before applying for registration?
4. What are the exams that Overseas Trained Specialists are required to take to gain FRANZCP?
5. How long is the overall process?
6. What kind of salary am I looking at as a trainee (i fall under partially comparable i think) assuming I work overtime and alternate weekends?
7. How difficult is it to get a registrar job in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth initially? I am also okay with having a job that is about 5-6 hours away from these cities.
8. How different is Psychiatry practice there compared to India?

Thank you for reading and I hope you will reply.

its not so tough....

go to amc website

submit application n fee n send ur documents for verification

Amc will verify your documents...it may take time

depending on ur qualification they ll provide you training pathway or exempt pathway

training pathway takes 5-6 years and exempt pathway is minimum one year to three year depending on ur qualification

time taken in document verification may take 45 to 60 days.

reply from RANZCP depends but shudn't be too long as they are in need of Psychiatrist there

if u are applying thru RANZCP..u need not to apply for a job but u can take till u wait for the reply

not sure about the location of ur training

salary depends upon the trust or hospital in which u ll get trained...but not an issue as it is high n handsome as compared in India

practice in india is entirely different from western countries..there u hv to follow a standard pathway for everything...whether it is patient dealing or clinical practice unlike in India where it is tailor made, ie. u are seeing one patient in 5 mins and another in 15 mins

1. What is the first thing I should do after my MD for application through Specialist Pathway?

- you need a job in Australia before you apply- I would recommend going through an agency eg IMR, wavelenght unless you have links in Oz

2. After I send my application, how long will it take to get a reply from RANZCP?

-I received a response after 3 weeks
3. Do I have to get a job after the reply from RANZCP or should I already have a job offer before applying for registration?

-see above
4. What are the exams that Overseas Trained Specialists are required to take to gain FRANZCP?

-depends on how much experience you have but most will have to do MOCI (ie a long case) and MOSCE (like to CASC in the UK but harder!)

5. How long is the overall process?

-if you do exams at least 18months - that's assuming you pass exams first time and don't have to do advanced training
6. What kind of salary am I looking at as a trainee (i fall under partially comparable i think) assuming I work overtime and alternate weekends?

- I am a senior reg and ear $126,000 but it varies depending on the state
7. How difficult is it to get a registrar job in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth initially? I am also okay with having a job that is about 5-6 hours away from these cities.

-it used to be easy getting jobs in these areas but its a lot harder now - the main issue will be getting a visa.  I suggest you check employment websites/agencies
8. How different is Psychiatry practice there compared to India?

No idea, I trained in the UK
