Short Term Positions in Australia

3 posts in this topic

Dear all

I'm looking for some information, and hoping that someone here might be able to help.

For personal reasons, it's possible that I will have to shift to Australia (probably Melbourne, although this isn't completely certain) for a short while (I'm anticipating between 2 and 4 years).  I'm a psychiatrist with Indian qualifications (an MD) and four years of experience post-qualification, mostly in India (apart from the past 6 months working as a lecturer in Malaysia).

At present, I'm hoping to return to India in the long-term, so I'm not sure I want to go through the process of getting my qualifications certified (which sounds quite onerous, and I'm not sure whether it would make sense).

Are there any pathways to train/research/work in Australia, that would be open to someone in my position? My own preference would be to enter a research position, but I'm a bit hazy about (a) whether I would be allowed into a research position without a clinical qualification in Australia, (b) whether a requirement for relevant research experience would be a requirement and (c) whether to apply directly for a PhD/Masters position, or to look for a shorter term researcher position. On the other hand, I realise that I should be looking at all possibilities, so any and all advice would be welcome.

As the shift is likely to be independent of my own plans, it is even possible that I will be able to travel to Australia in order to explore possibilities.

Thanks

Hi

I was doing some reading, so thought I'd boost this post back up to the top by putting it up. :-)

Does anyone here have experience of the "Specialist pathway - Short term training (specialist in training)" process that's mentioned here? Is this a realistic pathway to train in Australia, for someone with medical/specialist qualifications from India or similar?

If someone could help out with any information at all, would be hugely helpful.

Vijay
