CAREER in private psych hospitals

3 posts in this topic

Hi I'm having a bit of a career crisis and need some advice

I've worked in various specialities including psych but am finding it difficult to continue in a training position (core trainee) and continue with other life commitments. Also, I really can't see myself working as a consultant but can see myself continuing to work at SHO level.

Does anyone know what working as a staff grade in private psychiatric hospitals such as St Andrew's or the Priory is like? I don't mind the lack of teaching etc and would prefer a role where I'm just providing a service. But what is the money and general work environment is like as I'm anxious about leaving the NHS

Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated

As a speciality doctor/associate specialist, you would be able to earn between 70-85K pounds per annum, depending on your experience. This also depends on the HR manager you come across while negotiating.

This would invariably include non-resident on call at least one per week. In a huge set up like St.Andrews Northampton, the frequency of on call would be much less but it would be resident on call.

If you are lucky to have a friendly consultant/medical director who is involved in private work, you can earn extra money by helping them with court reports and solicitor reports.
