RANZCP "Specialist Pathway" Process Query.

7 posts in this topic

Hi,

I am a Registered consultant Psychiatrist and a Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan. I recently  immigrated to Australia and completed all requisites for applying to "Specialist Pathway" assessment from RANZCP.

The problem is that it seems I have hit a dark dead end in following the process for "Specialist Pathway" assessment as the only requirement left is that RANZCP wants me to have a job offer from an employer before I can submit my application for assessment. Although, EVERY job I have applied for responds by saying that I first need to have assessment outcome from RANZCP before I can be considered for the job, as I cant get AHPRA registration before that. This seems like a chicken or egg problem. Am I missing something here? or is the process of RANZCP "Specialist Pathway" faulty in itself?

I have knocked every door, RANZCP, employers, recruitment agencies and all my contacts, No one has a solution to this that HOW ON EARTH can one secure a job if the requirement is to first get an assessment outcome from RANZCP, and RANZCP wont allow application submission until an employer offers a job???

I would really appreciate any guidance in this regard from any r=one who has faced  the same issue or has a knowledge about how to proceed with this?

Thank You.

No idea boss..

i know the specialist pathway has changed a bit, but i am not sure what the requirements are as i arrived here on a different pathway. of the few people that i have come across who arrived here as consultants were offered jobs before they arrived.. and the job offer, job description etc allowed them to do the College stuff.. that again seemed to be a huge obstacle and they were required to do a few additional posts, appear for exams, etc etc..  long winded path..

i dont know abt the details though..

You must have job offer before RANZCP application, the offer is normally conditional that you are eligible to apply for FRANZCP (ie you don't have to already have FRANZCP), only very limited jobs will allow this. the recruitment agencies usually guide the applicants through this, you should contact one with more experience with your situation

Hi Nariman , when did you complete your FCPS and where from? How much post- FCPS experience you have? Any experience outside Pakistan? Are you applying for jobs only around Sydney or in smaller hospitals as well?? I have some experience of working with guys who came through specialist pathway.... It seems better to apply directly to the hospital/service and they take you through the application, assessment and registration process.

Cheers

Probably this is the best time of the year to apply for jobs in Australia as most of the induction campaigns have ended and the remaining posts will go to IMGs including those on specialist pathway. Yes; this is a dilemma to get a job offer before RANZCP assesses your application. However these days the process is very quick and they should not take more than 1-3 months before they finalise it. AHPRA will take only a few weeks if rest of the stuff is ready.... I would suggest applying directly to the hospitals.... In psychiatry, there are jobs and the hospitals know that they have to offer you the job before the ball gets rolling... so they accommodate the assessment period and registration delay.... if they are refusing you, look else where and don't  get dishearten.... I have not met anyone who came after FCPS. However I have met many who completed their specialist degree in Egypt, India and Nigeria....

After assessment, probably they would ask you to do 2-3 years of more training and then the exams..... AHPRA would offer you a conditional registration for further training.....
