3 posts in this topic

Any Psychiatrist registrar who is working towards a phD?

Or anybody else who can advice getting into academic psychiatry, can we get into it during specialist training or do we have to choose academic core training?

Please note that I am an international doctor, any help would be appreciated

Thank you

No straightforward answer to this one. PhD is a huge commitment. Some registrars do their PhD in between core and higher training, some do after becoming a consultant. There is also a group of people who did PhD before starting psychiatry training. No golden rule on timing. It really depends on your long-term career expectations.

The most important determinant of the PhD is for sure the funding. You need to find a scholarship unless you can afford 50-60k per year.

Academic core training (ACF) is designed to give people the opportunity to familiarise with research and expected outcome is that they would be in a position to propose PhD project. It is not the rule. You can find a PhD and do it as out of training experience (meaning that you froze your specialty training while you are doing PhD) but you need to check visa requirements. Part time PhD is rare but can be considered. There is also MD (research degree) that is equivalent to PhD in terms of grant application etc.

Best wishes

M
