Are you serious about this? I mean, is that what MRCPsych is about?

The essay paper is about a lot things: thinking laterally, generating arguments, imposing structure and so on. This means that the question/topic is secondary to getting the candidate to do the above i.e. the question is almost irrelevant. The questions can be a sounding board for the examiners own prejudices (echoing the above question itself), but that works out fine because if you disagree strongly with the statement/question you should be able to argue very easily against it.

interesting question spidey,

I'd start with...

0. It is said doctors chose psychiatry in the hope of finding a 'cure' for what they've got.

1. There is a strong current of personal development (of the therapist) running through psychiatry.

2. confronting and analysing our own countertransferences alows us to explore our own internal relationships with our parents, and other significant influences.

3. This cannot be sepparated from the analysis of the patient, lending weight and a deeper meaning to the concept of 'theraputic alliance'.

4. Psychiatry is thus a more cooperative enterprise than general medicine.

5. (sociology) the old 'doctor is dad, nurse is mom and patient is kid' model of the doctor patient relationship is changing to at first a cooperative model where power is shared and more recently a consumer oriented model.

6. End with musings on this particular challenge for psychiatry, ie will it remain a cooperative enterprise or will it become more consumer oriented venture like everything else seems to be.

Mentioning the relative youth of psychiatry as opposed to Gen Med.

PS right on Justin, especially 'the question is irrelevant', turn the question to your own devices, just don't go totaly tangential.

???many weeks on, i still have great difficulty with this question.

:o what is meant by psychiatry, therapy ,medication or social interventions.

::)correct our parents faults, after years of analysis it is hard to overcome denial of parental shortcomings and idealization continues.

8)confession implies a catholic tradition, hardly the norm these days in therapy, but there are religious therapists.

my difficulty lies in coming up with a plan and i hope the more literate members of the group can come with some ideas

psychiatry is abroad discipline. The title ofg this essay seems to refer to the psychodynamic side of psychiatry. This is practsed more by psychotherapists than the general adult psychiatrist who deals with the more common or garden ' sever mental illness' using the biopsychosocial approach to treatment within the multidisciplinary team framework.

The talking therapies that allow us to delve into the past and form links between our early experiences and our current maladaptive thinking/feeling/behaviour are the dynamic therapies. these come as either short 9up to 24 weeks), long ( a year or more), individual?group or couple therapies. Family therapies are more along sysstems theory.

Psychiatry finds hidden and intangible causes and provides explanations or models which enable the patient to work through their distress.

The father of psychotherapy, frued was originally trained as a neurologist and his early topographicall model of thge mind reflects this concrete thinkingy - system unconscious, preconscious and conscious. This was superceded by the structural model - id/ego/superego all fulfilling differing functions.

the ancients - hippocrates, Galen also recognised the importance of the psyche or soul and their impact on an individuals health.

crossculturally and historically this area has been the preserve of the priest or shaman or the witch doctor. In the postmodern western world and in the industrialised developed world, allopathic medicine and science has taken over and the healing of the psyche/soul or spirit has come to reside with the doctors called psychiatrists.

Thay allow you to talk and enable healing to take place. The modern models are no more provable or subjectable to the scientific method (poppers falsification theory) than the other models. But it works.

Our parents make mistakes in our upbringing abnd sometimes this leads to disorder. talking enables understanding and hopefully healing.

in conclusion, talking therapies are just one of thge psychotherapeutic tools available to us, either now or in the past or in different cultures. In conjunction with everything telse psychiatrists do, it forms a part of the treatment we can offer as apackage of care...
