this essay is about 'evidence based medicine'.

there are two types of research - process research and outcome research. The former is one way of assessing psychotherapy research - by looking at the process of the therapy eg taping the interviews and transcribing the sessioin then getting two or more independent researchers to review it looking for particular elements eg making links or providing a formulation.

Most clinical research eg rcts, controlled studies or even case reviews, systematic analyses are examples of outcome research. Included also is audit. we look at outcomes which are measurable eg mortality rates/recovery or remission rates/ discharge from hospital/admission rates/ morbidity eg score on a ratig scale or functional recovery...all of therse are measures of outcome by which different interventions are comperd. This is typical of the experimental method where we need to quntify the differences in order to justify our practice and statistical techniques are usually used in the calcultaion of power at the beginning of a study and at the end in the analysis stage.

Another type of study is the qualitative study - in which more complex issues are investigated, eg exploring the structure of an organisation, opinions or in hypothesis generation, this is akin to the type of researcgh more usually associated with sociologists but in psychiatry can include interviews/fous groups and its importance is becoming increasingly reconised.

conclusion.

the current trend to back up our practice through evidence, the quality of which can be stated in a hierarchy ( eg gold standard is double blind rct) is based on research which on the whole compares outcomes ie is outcome research....
