I'd love to have got on the Manchester Course but I am banished to the land of NB. Just out of interest is there anyone I could sleep with to get on the course?

The actual essay bit of manchester was not good and really rushed but the handout was cracking.

You have a pretty good way with the words we can all see that, is it structure you lack? I cant believe it is knowledge, you seem to have all you need and more! But it isnt the written that is the problem is it?

To see Part 2 as a problem is pretty negative. Its just a necessary evil - we'll all get it in the end.

Gotta agree, risky biz. Get a nice prose style and argue a point. They will love you!!

No bullet points I heard a rumour that someone got failed because they made lists (only a rumour webmaster) but even if a lie it makes an important point.

Have been marking essays from mock essay exams we set the SHOs locally and found it a very enlightening experience (if a little, chew off your own arm, boring). Key points between a good and bad essay wasn't really anything much about knowledge and references (although the odd one trying to write for 90 minutes on something they knew NOTHING about was obvious).

Main skill that made the difference is clear communication and well planned and structured arguments. Even those with less to say who could elaborate on a point well, give both sides of an argument and then bring it all together in their conclusion scored well (using the college mark sheet). This is the skill to practice.

My suggestion is to do lots of practice at essay plans and get someone to look at them to constructively criticise and if you can get someone to write three topics on a bit of paper and at least once try and do the full 90 minute thing, even better. It is hard to get yourself to do it but is THE best practice other than sitting the exam (and that is too expensive ot ever just consider as practice).

Essays are

Comorbidy

- could be any for example

schizophrenia and substance abuse disorder

schizophrenia and anxiety disorder

pyschosis and learning disability

schizophrenia and physical disorders

depression and anxiety disorders

substance abuse and personality disorder

schizophrenia and personality disorder

Liaision Psychiatry - its role

Asylum seekers

ECT - new NICE guideline

Mood stabilizers - role of lithium

Bipolar affective disorder - new research paradigms

Learning disability - challenging behaviour

Cannabis - issues of legalization

Child Psychiatry - ADHD and new management criteria and role of methylphenidate

Community psychiatry - has it failed: this topic came before also but maybe this time

Last time there was topic on old age and psychotherapy so there is less likely any essays would be repeated on this topic

Another topic is AUTISM esp the current aetiological controversies.

Role of genetics in development of psychiatry

my predictions are pretty similar to those of 'shrink'

what do you do if you haven't a clue about any of the 3 questions?

My reading has not been particularly wide, and the essay is likely to be my 'weakest link'

my essay prep has been very limited - haven't read the BJPsych/APT at all really - attended Manchester course

hi

if you do just one service development essay in general and modify it as per the topic, you should not have any problems. just make sure to not use any references or epidemiology if not sure of it.

at least thats my stratagy. I have prepared an essay on service development for women but its in generic form and would use it for all such questions if I cant do any of the two remaining.

thanks - I also have the service development essay on mother & baby psych from the Manchester course - I am really banking on one of the following, or a variant turning up:

M & B

Cannabis & mental health

Refugees

Comorbid substance misuse management

ECT

Mood stabilisers

if none of them turn up, I might as well not bother sticking around for the afternoon!!
