Essay 'corner cut'

13 posts in this topic

Bearing in mind an essay on schizophrenia always comes up, is it worth just honing in on this subject and not bothering with the rest?

What do people think about this possible strategy?

I think that schizophrenia may not be one of the topics this time. So not a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket!!

Schizophrenia might not come out, however one of the major mental illnesses will. If you prepare thoroughly for depression, BPAD and schizophrenia you will definitely get a question on one of these. It is difficult to predict the subspecialty questions but there has NEVER been an exam in which the general adult question does not involve one of the big three. They may ask the question from different angles (aetiology, genetics, management etc...), however it will involve one of these three disorders.

Every past paper I've ever seen has had an essay question about schizophrenia.

Although it's probably not a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket re one particular condition, you can prepare an essay that is transferable to several different questions. Think in terms of classification, service provision, general ways things are done in practice versus 'best practice', history, any particular trials you're aware of, advantages and disadvantages of certain systems e.g. CPA or NWW.

IMO They're looking for a balanced approach - if you present two sides of an argument and come out in favour of one side then you'll be doing well. What they don't want is regurgation of facts that are available anywhere e.g. giving the a) to h) of schizophrenic symptoms. They assume you know that. What they want is for you to use your knowledge to come up with an argument and some opinions on things. In other words it's about 'you' not just what you've read.

In Schizophrenia-

Recovery model?

Carers?

Physical health?

None of these have come up before, and they tend not to repeat themselves...

Early intervention in psychosis? Is it justified. You have a lot of points to argue for and against. there are so many services springing up, hence, can be topical.

Cannabis and Schizophrenia [ please know a few references] - can be topical due to the government showing renewed interest in its classification .

Social defeat hypothesis in schizophrenia.

Assertive outreach has brought about siginficant change in patient recovery? discuss-- can be an essay topic.

It may be wise to look fo any studies on crisis resolution and home treatment teams . R they effective ?

Cognitive dysfunction-- An artefact of medication side effects or part of the illness in Schizophrenia.
