Spring 05 - More uncertain questions

10 posts in this topic

Some of these seem obvious but I can't find definite proof. My suspected answers below.

Be interested to see if anyone else has better luck

1. The incidence of depression has fallen in the western world in last 2 decades

2. According to non verbal gaze communication there is long sustained gaze before the last utterance of a word

3. ADHD is associated with alcohol dependence in adulthood

4. Bottle fed babies are slow to warm up

5. The addiction potential of a drug lies in its affinity to the receptor

6. Disulfiram is KNOWN to provoke mania

7. Lewy bodies are seen in 40% of dementias

8. Family members of LD patients show sensitisation to bereavement

9. The EEG in hypothyroidism shows reduced alpha waves

10. A child with severe specific reading disorder has a normal digit span

1. False? - incidence probably unchanged

2. True? - don't know

3. True? - seems likely but alcohol problems not listed in any otcomes I've seen for ADHD

4. False? - cant see why there would be a difference

5. True? - seems logical but feels like I could be missing something

6. True? - BNF lists as a rare side-effect 'psychotic reactions' which includes mania. Guess that means true

7. False? - Oxford textbook says autopsy studies show DLB in 15-25% but is that the maximum for Lewy Bodies in all demenitas?

8. True? - Don't really understand this question. There is a grief reaction to LD but what does the 'sensitsed' mean? Does it mean bereavement is easier or expected?

9. True? Don't know

10. True? Severe specific reading disorder doesn't imply memory problems though there may be 'associated emotional disorders... social disadvantage... and conduct disorder'.

Hiya qualitytime, am making a start

9. The EEG in hypothyroidism shows reduced alpha waves - True

* Electroencephalography in hypothyroidism (eMedicine)

- EEG is characterized by an excess of low-voltage activity with a poor or absent alpha-blocking response.

3. ADHD is associated with alcohol dependence in adulthood - False

Can't quote a ref. But can discuss some issues

- 4 long big studies in ADHD

1. The MTA study

2. Weiss Montreal study

3. Manuzza New York Study

4. Rasmussen and Gillberg Swedish study

Only one lists alcohol abuse and this found a low <2 % alcoholism rate...so the words 'is associated' would make me say false.

Any better evidence anyone?

6. Disulfiram is KNOWN to provoke mania - True

The Katona, Cookson and Taylor book does not mention it, but Kaplan Sadock says it exacerbates any form of psychosis... and then there the Merck manual which says it does provoke mania...

Overall, true

10. A child with severe specific reading disorder has a normal digit span

False.

Kids with SRD have lower verbal IQ than performance IQ (G&S). Digit span is a subset of verbal IQ (Puri & Hall). Well, others may not agree with my deduction.
