Part II ISQ Club - Statistics

29 posts in this topic

Part II ISQs on two topics will be posted twice a week. You are encouraged to post a reply in the thread, stating whether you think an ISQ is true or false and why (eg. a short explanation, with reference to the textbook you used). Please only deal with one ISQ in each post and include the question as the first line of your post. All ISQs are taken from previous posts by Forum members.

In a few days this ISQ Club thread will be moved to the Question Bank board. If you submit an answer, your status will be changed to 'Question Bank member' and you will be able to see the Question Bank board. Please allow up to 48 hours for this change to happen.

.1 Regression analysis for continuous data is done by least squares method true

2. Least squares method is used for regression analysis of categorical data. false. ans is logistic regression

Least squares method is used to model continuous outcomes, for e.g. scores on a depression test, assumes dependent variables are normally distributed. page 210 companion

13. The Eating Disorder Inventory is a self-rated questionnaire

TRUE

“The Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) is a 64-item, 6-point forced-choice inventory assessing several behavioral and psychological traits common in two eating disorders, bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

The EDI, a self-report measure, may be utilized as a screening device, outcome measure, or part of typological research.

It is not purported to be a diagnostic test for anorexia nervosa or bulimia.

Scoring: The EDI consists of 8 subscale scores: drive for thinness, bulimia, body dissatisfaction, ineffectiveness, perfectionism, interpersonal distrust, interoceptive awareness, and maturity fears. “

14. Means taken from large samples of a skewed distribution approximate to a normal distribution

TRUE

“The central limit theorem also states that the larger our set of samples the more normal our distribution will be. Thus, the sampling distribution of the mean will have a normal shape and become increasingly normal in shape as the number of samples increases. The sampling distribution of the mean will be normal regardless of the shape of the population distribution. Whether the population distribution is normal,positively or negatively skewed, unimodal or bimodal in shape,the sampling distribution of the mean will have a normal shape”

3. Correlation indicates agreement.

False

Correlation measures agreement but only indicates it if value near 1.

To say true here would mean the following would also be true:-

A pedometer indicates fitness.

I wish it did but right now mine only indicates that I'm on my bum too much. ::)

6 Standard error varies with the size of the population.

False

Lawrie p258

The formula is

SE = Stand Dev/(sq root of n)

Now standard deviation doesn't vary with population size

SD =Sq root[ sigma (x-x)2/(n-1)]

There is no population size variable in the equation so it can't influence it.

Back to the SE formula, the n refers to the sample size or the number sampled.

So this question would be true if it said the SE varies with the size of sample. Would also be true for SD as also has n or sample size in it.
