Part II ISQ Club - Forensic Psychiatry

49 posts in this topic

Part II ISQs will be posted twice a week on Monday and Thursday. You are encouraged to post a reply in the thread, stating whether you think an ISQ is true or false and why (eg. a short explanation, with reference to the textbook/clinical paper/web page you used). Please only deal with one ISQ in each post and include the question as the first line of your post.

2. 30% of homicides are committed by people with mental illness- TRUE/FALSE

FALSE

Of 900 homicides a year, only between 30 and 50 are committed by people suffering from severe mental illness, and that figure has remained static since records began.

TRUE

Around a third of all perpetrators of homicide had a diagnosis of mental disorder based on life history; the most common diagnoses were alcohol dependence, drug dependence and personality disorder.

16. Arson is overrepresented in LD offenders. F?

Psychiatrists may associate arson and sexual offences with people with a learning disability. This is somewhat erroneous; arson and sexual offences have been found to be relatively more common only among adults on hospital orders (Walker & McCabe, 1973; Kearns & O'Connor, 1988). As with other groups of offenders, property offences (excluding arson) are by far the most common (Day, 1990). Ian Hall, Young offenders with a learning disability, APT, (2000) 6: 278-285

Manchester Course says it is True, 'arson and sex offences are overepresented'.

19. Infanticide is positively associated with women who exibited pregnancy denial. T

Am J Psychiatry 158:811-813, May 2001A Systematic Investigation of 16 Cases of Neonaticide

'Neonaticide, or infant murder on the day of birth, is often preceded by denial of pregnancy. The preponderance of case reports of neonaticide describes a pattern of pregnancy denial, dissociation, and ego disorganization'

Unless they are trying to catch us on infanticide vs neonacide....

18. Infanticide, on conviction, leads to a sentence fixed by law. -false

Infanticide by definition= < diminished responsibilty

So sentences are not fixed like life for murder.ie flexible

Ref:http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/section5/chapter_a.html

Infanticide as an alternative to murder should be preferred where:

a mother has killed her child before it reached 12 months of age; and

there is medical evidence that the balance of the mother's mind was disturbed, either because she had not fully recovered from the effects of the birth of the child; or because of the effect of lactation on her.

2. 30% of homicides are committed by people with mental illness- TRUE/FALSE

This one I would say FALSE and stick to your guns with your justification... bottom line is, we defend the position that menal health probs  is only slightly overrepresented in violent crimes 'there is an association, albeit only a small one' - which would be the line to take if it came up in an essay... my views!

FALSE
