Part II ISQ Club - Psychology

32 posts in this topic

Part II ISQs on two topics will be posted twice a week. You are encouraged to post a reply in the thread, stating whether you think an ISQ is true or false and why (eg. a short explanation, with reference to the textbook you used). Please only deal with one ISQ in each post and include the question as the first line of your post. All ISQs are taken from previous posts by Forum members.

In a few days this ISQ Club thread will be moved to the Question Bank board. If you submit an answer, your status will be changed to 'Question Bank member' and you will be able to see the Question Bank board. Please allow up to 48 hours for this change to happen.

Bion sees transference only as directed towards the therapist who represents authority. In dependency, the group tries to elicit protection through passive or dependent behaviour. In fight or flight they will attack the therapist or some other issue, or retreat and withdraw. 8) In pairing they may create a group illusion that some magical form of rescue may arise from the dilemmas of group life through charged partnerships

10. According to the WHO, disability follows impairment

TRUE

The most commonly cited definition is that of the World Health Organisation in 1976(1), which draws a three-fold distinction between impairment, disability and handicap, defined as follows. 'An impairment is any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or function; a disability is any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being; a handicap is a disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from an impairment or a disability, that prevents the fulfilment of a role that is considered normal (depending on age, sex and social and cultural factors) for that individual'.

4. Spiral deviance is to do with primary and secondary deviance

true

primary deviance is first act of deviance

secondary deviance

As used by Edwin Lemert, secondary deviance refers to deviant behavior which flows from a stigmatized sense of self; the deviance is thought to be consistent with the character of the self. A person's self can be stigmatized or tainted by public labelling. Secondary deviance is contrasted to primary deviance, which may be behaviorally identical to secondary deviance but is incorporated into a 'normal' sense of self. One may, for example, get drunk several times because one sees oneself as enjoying a party. However, if one notices that friends are hiding their liquor during visits to their house, one may come to see oneself as a 'drunk' and then continue to get drunk because one is a drunk. The first acts are primary deviance and the second act is secondary deviance.

Deviancy amplification spiral

According to the theory, the spiral starts with some 'deviant' act. Usually the deviance is criminal but it can also involve legal acts considered (rightly or wrongly) morally repugnant.

Irresponsible publicity can increase deviant behaviour by glamourising it or making it seem common or acceptable.
