Discretionary points for Staff Grades

Can anyone explain how discretionary points are awarded to staff grades for salary purposes? I understand there is no one answer but what is the usual way of going about it.

Each Trust has its own way of doing this, so you'll have to find out the details from the LNC representative or HR. In general, once you reach the top of the scale of automatic increments, you receive an invitation from the Trust to apply for points (it should be once a year, until you reach the top of the scale). You need to fill in a form arguing why you should be given those points (if you're overloaded with work, audit/research, teaching, any improvements you've introduced -or helped introduce... and all the extra things you've done that year, beyond your duties). Once you submit the form, a Decision Making Group will meet and will decide who gets how many points. They don't need to give points to everybody (there is often a minimum, check with HR or LNC), and they can give more than one point per person.

BMA has Guidelines for filling the application for discretionary points. If you are a member, then please contact local BMA office in your area.

I found this quite helpful when making the application form for associate specialist points
