picks disease, can someone help?

2 posts in this topic

a friend of mine has been told by their doctor that Picks Disease [which they thought they might have] is nothing to worry about and that although they may have the disease, its 'in every one's brain tissue anyway'.

is this true?

is it picked up on MRI scanning?

pick's disease is a form of dementia that affects the frontal-temporal lobes and thus the effects are secondary to this. Main things are change in personality, loss of memory/language, increased eating etc.

it is progressive. there is no cure but symptoms can be helped. as far as i know, MRI is not indicated as a diagnostic tool, diagnosis is mainly by taking a good history and neuropsychological testing if not clear. there is some research in using PET but it will take a while before that becomes common practise.
