Antipsychotics and Constipation

How do you guys manage constipation caused by Clozapine et al apart from lactulose, senna, fybogel et al. Is there a protocol that can be followed or is it treat it as it comes approach. increasing physical activity, increased fibre content in food, prunes are other advices. Anything more useful :-/

Also make sure antimuscarinic (if any) is prescribed if absolutely necessary.

Antimuscarinic with Clozapine only adds to the side effects.

yup thats right also opioids like dihydrocodeine can be lethal that way.thanks lad. :)

There is strict guidance in most of the trust. Regular monitoring is helpful and in our trust, bowel chart is mandatory for every patient who is taking Clozapine. Regular exercise, diet rich in fibre is helpful (sorry, it sounds boring because it is known to every one) Lactulose, Senna Fibrogel and Movicol all very useful. Last option is to stop Clozapine because it can cause obstruction and rupture of bowel.

bowel chart is mandatory for every patient who is taking Clozapine.

Could you say more about this chart. Sounds like a good idea to implement on a Rehab unit where I work

We quiet often get stuck with this issue !
